How Often Should you have an Eye Examination?
At Currie & Quirk we recommend regular eye examinations for everyone, under 60 every 2 years, over 60 every year, or as advised by your Optometrist.
Eye conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cataracts, macular degeneration, and many other eye diseases may be detected through an eye examination, which is why regular eye examinations means early detection.
Eye Examination Explained
The Optometrist will begin with some questions to review your current general health and family medical history, and will ask you if you have any concerns with regard to your vision.
An ophthalmoscope will be used to shine a light into your eye, allowing the Optometrist to examine the health of the eye, inside and out.
They will also use a retinoscope which is used in a comprehensive eye examination to give the optometrist an indication of what kind of prescription you may need.
They will also conduct an assessment of the eye muscles to evaluate the ability of your eyes to work together.
Measuring your eye pressure
Our Optometrists use a tonometer to measure the eye pressure.
This is one of the tests for assessing the presence of glaucoma.
The Letter Chart
The letter chart test fine-tunes the prescription estimated by the previous retinoscopy.
During this test the Optometrist will show you a choice of lenses and using a portable illuminated test chart along with trial lenses/frames, they will decide which lens makes your vision clearer.
Based on your answers, the optometrist will be able to determine which exact prescription is best for you.
The letter test tells the Optometrist how long-sighted or short-sighted you are.
TYPES OF SPECTACLES
Single Vision - These are spectacles in which the lenses have a single prescription. That means that the wearer needs them for a specific purpose, either for seeing things in the distance or for reading.
Bifocals - Bifocal spectacles have lenses containing two prescriptions – one for distance and one for near. Meaning only one pair of spectacles are required for watching the television and reading.
Varifocals - Varifocals combine three prescriptions into one clear lens. They allow the patient to see comfortably at all distances with just one pair of spectacles.
Maximize Sight - During the visit we can also assess patients lighting for reading and give advice if we feel they would benefit from a brighter or more suitable light.
Our main goal is to help maximize patient’s sight which will in turn will help them to maximise their quality of life and safety at home, and also increase their confidence and self-esteem.
At Currie and Quirk we provide only the highest standards of clinical care. All our Optometrists are fully qualified and members of the British College of Optometrists.
